Since their inception, the New York Yankees have had several different locales for their Spring Training practices and games. But from 1924 to 1942, the Yankees played at Waterfront Park in St. Petersburg, Florida. Presented is an extraordinary 7" x 5" black-and-white photo of a smiling Lou Gehrig posing in front of a home in St. Petersburg in his Yankees road (gray) uniform. The back of the photo states: “Yankees vs. St. Louis Cards. Picture taken Sunday March 20, 1938.” The photo was signed boldly and carefully on the front by Gehrig in red ink nine days later as the reverse side further states: “Tuesday March 29 Yankees vs. Kansas City before last game in St. Petersburg.” What’s more is that the back of the photo was signed by 20 other Yankees, many of whom autographed it the following March (1939) as several have added the dates next to their signatures. Notable names include Paul “Daffy” Dean along with Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Manager Joe McCarthy, Lefty Gomez and Johnny Mize.
