Tough N173 cabinet photo featuring Phillies pitcher Charlie Ferguson, who won 99 games in just four seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. A budding star, Ferguson was a natural athlete, discovered while playing college ball at the University of Virginia despite not being a student. After signing with the Philadelphia Quakers, Ferguson quickly became a star, finishing 21-25 withe a 3.54 ERA in his inaugural season. He threw the first no-hitter in Quakers' history, blanking the Providence Grays in 1885. In 1887, the Quakers won 16 of their last 17 games to finish in second place. Ferguson played in all 17 games, posting a 7-0 record and batting .361 during that stretch.Tragically, Ferguson passed away in the spring of 1888, just after his 25th birthday, of typhoid fever - likely from drinking contaminated water. His 1888 Old Judge cabinet was issued posthumously, as a tribute. Strong eye appeal and a clean image overshadows the technical grade of the card, rendered POOR due to soiling and a heavy crease that has begun to tear, and has been repaired on the reverse with a piece of clear plastic tape. The photo of Ferguson itself, though, is detailed with excellent contrast. A strong example of a tough N173 cabinet.
