As referenced by the attached paper tag on reverse, John McGraw cracks a rare smile while posing for photographers in this 6.5" x 8.5" news service photo from Underwood. McGraw had good reason to be delighted as his men had just won the 1922 National League pennant, the Giants 8th since 1902. Though two large pieces are missing from both the lower-left and upper-right corners this remains a fantastic portrait of one of baseball's most influential figures. Large Underwood & Underwood stamping is present on verso along with a date stamp of October 16, 1922. Paper caption also displays a date of September 22, 1922, shortly before the 1922 World Series began at the Polo Grounds on October 4th. Please note the handwriting on the photo reverse is not John McGraw’s signature. Guaranteed Type 1.
