American icon, Jim Thorpe, champion of both the pentathlon and decathlon during the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden, works as a laborer in this 5" x 7" news service photo. In 1963 the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrined Thorpe as part of their inaugural class, and Thorpe also appeared in baseball's major leagues during the Deadball Era, competing for the New York Giants, Cincinnati Reds and Boston Braves between 1912-19. In March of 1931, when this photograph was taken, Thorpe was working to help excavate the area that would eventually become Los Angeles County Hospital. Photo remains clean throughout with bright-white borders. Verso includes a full paper caption, large International Newsreel credit stamping, and a date stamp of March 9, 1931. Authenticated as a Type 1 photo by PSA/DNA.
