Nippy Jones, whose first name was Vernal, debuted in the majors with the Cardinals in the latter part of 1946 and earned a ring in the World Series that year. He got shipped to the Phillies for 1952 and spent most of the season in AAA ball before decamping to the PCL for four-and-a-half productive seasons before the 1957 Braves came calling after Joe Adcock broke his leg in June. He had a pivotal pinch hit at bat in Game 4 of the World Series that year, when, with the Braves down a run, he earned a HBP after showing the umpire the shoe polish on the offending baseball. Three batters later Eddie Mathews hit a walkoff home run and Milwaukee went on the secure the Series in 7 games.
