One of the most popular players of his era Buck Ewing was featured on no fewer than 11 different N172 Old Judge cards this one classified in The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company (1886-1890) by Miller Gonsowski and Masson as #149-9. The card depicts the Giants great with his bat at the ready posing in studio as if preparing to deliver one of his 1 625 career hits. The card graded POOR 10 by SGC is yet another that is representative of the issues grading N172s - the image quality is extremely strong with excellent contrast and the front of the card appears in EX condition. The reverse of the card - which is blank anyway - has the telltale signs of scrapbook removal: glue stains and paper loss. Still it was that very scrapbook that preserved the front of the card so well which is why many 19th Century collectors are willing to overlook back damage on blank-backed cards. An outstanding example of an important Hall of Famer. Population Data SGC Population: 46 total graded 9 at this level 35 higher* PSA Population: 0 graded *Note that SGC does not differentiate N172 pose variations within its pop reports so this figure represents all the different Buck Ewing Old Judges they have graded.
