Easily the most popular and most important set of the gum card era, the 1933 Goudey issue is considered one of the "Big Three" sets in card collecting, along with the T206 and 1952 Topps issues. Featuring an incredible assortment of future Hall of Famers including four different cards of Babe Ruth, the set is an incredible challenge with popularity that continues to endure. Presented here is an attractive collector-grade complete set (minus card #106 of Nap Lajoie) that was assembled by an advanced collector over a long period, many of the cards purchased before the internet, when building a complete set in any grade was a significant challenge.
Because so much of the set was assembled before the advent of the internet, none of the cards were graded. We selected 36 cards for grading and submitted them to SGC. The results were as follows: SGC VG/EX 4 (5 cards): #49 Frisch, #107 Manush, #125 Terry, #128 Klein, #168 Goslin. SGC VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #160 Gehrig. SGC VG 3 (6 cards): #29 Foxx, #64 Grimes, #92 Gehrig, #109 Cronin, #164 Waner, #223 Dean. SGC GOOD+ 2.5 (7 cards): #22 Traynor, #64 Bottomley, #89 Speaker, #119 Hornsby, #158 Berg, #188 Hornsby, #250 Hubbell. SGC GOOD 2 (1 card): #149 Ruth SGC FR 1.5 (5 cards): #56 Ruffing, #73 Haines, #76 Cochrane, #138 Pennock, #189 Cronin. SGC PR 1 (11 cards): #19 Dickey, #53 Ruth, #110 Goslin, #127 Ott, #154 Foxx, #181 Ruth, #207 Ott, #211 Wilson, #220 Grove, #222 Gehringer, #234 Hubbell. Card #144 of Ruth was submitted and rejected, as it has been heavily trimmed and then reassembled with borders from a donor card, clearly altered.
A complete condition breakdown of the set would be: VG/EX: 6%, with a few stronger; VG: 21%; GOOD: 29%; FAIR 25%, POOR 19% with a few trimmed or altered. A breakdown of the set's ungraded keys are as follows: #25 Waner P, #31 Lazzeri F, #35 Simmons P, #42 Collins P (writing), #47 Manush P, #60 Hoyt F, #63 Cronin F, #74 Rixey P, #79 Faber G, #102 Jackson G, #103 Combs F, #117 Maranville P, #133 Lindstrom VG, #134 Rice VG, #144 Ruth Altered, #147 Durocher F, #187 Manush G, #194 Averill VG, #202 Hartnett P, #227 Herman VG, #229 Vaughan P.
An outstanding collector-grade complete set, the most important set of the 1930s and one of the most popular card issues ever manufactured, featuring four individual cards of Babe Ruth and two of Lou Gehrig. 239 cards total.
