Beautiful and rare premium issued by the Phillies Cigar company in that magical season of 1961. 6 1/2" x 9" photo card was made available to collectors, along with a Mickey Mantle model youth baseball glove, in exchange of 20 Phillies Cigar bands and $3.39. The premiums were likely distributed between 1961 and 1964, based on expiration dates in various advertisements for the promotion. Regardless, the cards are extremely scarce today, with PSA having graded just 21 examples, with just one at this level and only one higher - a sole PSA 8. Due to the fact that the cards were redeemable by mail-order, and targeted children, the majority of the few surviving examples are found in much lower grade.
This example is quite attractive, with sharp corners and edges and a clean image. "Bubbling" on the reverse visible in the scan is a result of the paper pushing against the plastic holder, and not any damage to the card itself. Some areas of mild age-related discoloration are visible on the back, the primary reason for the grade of a card that otherwise appears closer to NM.
