Outstanding 1941 letter from Larry Mac Phail to Jimmy Powers of the New York Daily News regarding Powers' column from that day.  Powers alleges that Mac Phail signed pitcher Kirby Higbe and, essentially, took advantage of him.  Mac Phail's four-page letter refutes the allegations, stating "If the charges are true and if I conspired with Nugent to defraud Higbe and lied to the press and public about the whole transaction, I should be barred from baseball for life because I am not entitled to occupy the position I now hold."  The letter goes on to advise Powers that MacPhail was requesting a full investigation and discipline from the Commissioner's office.

The letter is in VG condition with a few stains and some age-related toning.  The signature itself is bold and clean, a desirable signature from the era.  We have uploaded a copy of Powers' Daily News column to this lot listing as supporting documentation.  LOA from James Spence Authentication.
