Colorful official 5 cent Boston Braves scorecard from 1935 with pencil notations at the top dating the scorecard to May 11. In that springtime game the Chicago Cubs defeated the Braves by a score of 14-7 scoring 7 runs in the first two innings. The 1935 Braves team famously featured Babe Ruth in his final season playing in Boston with hopes of resuscitating his image. The Sultan of Swat managed a dismal .181 batting average in just 28 games hitting just 6 home runs as a bench player. By May 11 Ruth knew his career was largely over and that his role of "Assistant Manager" of the Braves was a sham designed to generate publicity for the failing Boston team. According to author Rob Neyer in Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Blunders the day after this game on May 12 Ruth asked to be allowed to retire and was persuaded to remain with the team until after Memorial Day. Just a few weeks after this May 11 game on May 25 Ruth would hit the last three home runs of his career - all in one game against Pittsburgh including his last the longest home run ever hit at Forbes Field until that time and the first to clear the 86-foot roof in right field. He retired a few days later. The scorecard appears in VG condition with the aforementioned pencil notations on the front. The game has been scored in pencil. The remaining wear is largely age-related with edge wear and toning consistent with the age of the piece. An exceptional piece documenting the tail end of the great Babe Ruth's career.
