Extraordinarily scarce and desirable postcard of Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. The extreme scarcity of this card (and Rose Company Postcards in general) is noteworthy, the ornate cards featuring a black and white player portrait photo in the center of a colorful frame. The card was consigned by a postcard collector with few sports-related items in his collection; we submitted this example to PSA for grading, where it became just the 4th example of this card that they have graded. SGC, for their part, has graded five, the total graded population of 9 an indication of the extreme scarcity of the card.
The card itself presents extremely well for the grade, the bulk of the wear is evident on the reverse, where one can see surface discolorations likely caused by scrapbook storage against colored paper with mounting corners leaving some evidence of their presence. Some very mild surface indentations are visible on the front, along with some very light corner and surface wear. Despite the accurate grade, the eye appeal is tremendous, a fantastic example of a highly prized postcard, fresh to the hobby.
