Exceptional 4" x 5" original glass plate negative depicting young Yankees superstar and future all-time-great Babe Ruth. Ruth is posed on the top step of the dugout at the Polo Grounds, bat in-hand as he confidently surveys the field. Though the photographer is unknown this is an exceptionally clear image of Ruth taken in his prime sometime between 1920-23. We can attribute this image to within those years as Ruth debuted with the Yankees in 1920 and his Yankees played their home games at the Polo Grounds through 1922 before moving to Yankee Stadium in 1923. The Yankees also did return to the Polo Grounds for the 1923 World Series. Negative itself remains in wonderful overall condition with just a hint of discoloration around the edges due to age. There is a spot of emulsion loss on the left side that does not impact the central image. A positively magnificent example of photographic material from baseball's golden age.
