Born a deaf man, Luther "Dummy" Taylor emerged as one of the most fascinating characters in baseball history, contributing greatly to a pitching staff anchored by Hall of Fame teammates Christy Mathewson and Joe McGinnity. Taylor finished his career with a 116-106 record, helping the NY Giants to two pennant winning seasons in 1904 and 1905 where he went 21-15 and 16-9 respectively. Fred Snodgrass commented in Larry Ritter's The Glory of Their Times about the Giants willingness to learn sign language, taught to them by Taylor, a precursor to hand signal communication seen in the modern game. Both presented photographs feature images captured at the Polo Grounds and measure approx. 6" x 2.75" and 5" x 6.25". Scattered wear is present across both photos, including pinholes and light chipping. Fading of the images is consistent with virtually all early Paul Thompson photos from this era. Verso of both photos include handwritten notations along with a single Paul Thompson credit stamp. Both are fresh to the hobby and originate from the archives of Photo File, Inc. where they have been stored for several decades until this offering. Guaranteed Type 1.
