Bright 1958 Topps card, boldly signed and inscribed in blue ballpoint by Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente. Clemente signatures are among the most popular and desirable in autograph collecting; his signed cards are particularly scarce. Beginning in about 1960, Clemente's good friend Phil Dorsey helped handle Clemente's autograph requests by signing on his behalf. As a result, a good portion of Clemente autographs after that time were actually clubhouse signatures. Autograph authenticators today can easily tell the difference, and this example has been assessed and authenticated by both James Spence Authentication and PSA/DNA. In fact, the card was submitted by us in the winter of 2022 to PSA for crossover from an SGC Authentic holder, so the card has actually been authenticated by three leading authenticators since 2015.
The signature on this card is clean and legible, with some very slight smudging, though nothing that impacts the attractiveness of the signature or inscription. The card itself grades FAIR-POOR at best, with creasing and edge wear, along with some mild surface soiling, however, the condition of the card is secondary to the beauty and scarcity of the signature. LOA from James Spence Authentication and grading label from SGC Authentic are also included.
