Beautiful postcard of Olympian Jim Thorpe, one of the greatest of all American athletes, in his track and field uniform from the 1912 Olympic Games. In 1912, Thorpe competed in two Olympic events: the Pentathlon and the Decathlon. He won Gold Medals for both, and in addition to receiving the medals, won two prizes which were donated by King Gustav of Sweden and Czar Nicholas II of Russia. When Thorpe was presented with his prize by Kin Gustav, Gustav told Thorpe "You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world." Thorpe famously responded "Thanks, King."
This spectacular postcard is the finest example graded by SGC, with just one example graded higher by PSA. The only example SGC has graded at this level, the postcard is sharp and clean, with some light corner touches and minor silvering evident. An outstanding postcard, one of the finest we have handled, and one of the earliest known collectibles of the great American athlete.
