Another of a small group of T206 Hall of Famers originating from a small but high-quality collection of prewar cards assembled by a gentleman in Southern California. We met the gentleman while exhibiting at a small, regional show in Culver City nearly ten years ago; at the time he had left the hobby but was only considering the possibility of selling his cards. We were thrilled that he remembered Love of the Game when finally deciding to sell, and he consigned his entire collection to us in advance of our Spring, 2021 sale, in which most of his cards appeared. We were surprised to learn, upon submitting his cards to SGC for grading, that all of his T206s were returned with AUTHENTIC grades. While we do acknowledge that the grades could possibly be the result of a slight trim, we also acknowledge that the cards - including this beautiful Mathewson - were purchased before third party grading had taken hold in the hobby, and he carefully stored each of his prewar cards in screwdown holders. Today we know that screw downs can cause damage to card edges that can be interpreted as pressing, and so we should at least entertain the possibility that this is the case with this card. Regardless, it has been accurately graded AUTHENTIC by SGC, and remains a strong example with a dynamic image, clean borders, and a slight centering issue, along with attributes likely associated with the card edges to result in the AUTHENTIC grade.
