Outstanding cardboard and celluloid three-dimensional scoreboard advertising display, featuring Hall of Famer and broadcaster Frankie Frisch, advertising Krueger Beer. Frisch is pictured in the center of a stylized baseball display that measures approximately 11 1/2" in diameter (the entire display measures 11 1/2" x 14" x about 2" in depth). The baseball is somewhat three-dimensional, approximately 2" deep with a hole in the center into which the photo appears. Frisch is positioned in front of a WPIX microphone and a tall glass of Krueger beer, the advertising copy on the piece promoting Frisch' postgame shows on Channel 11 after Giant home games. A paper scoreboard is affixed to the base of the piece, so that store owners could provide inning-by-inning game updates for customers. A thick (approximately 1/4") pad of scorecards, which likely broke away from the rest of the pad that is attached to the piece, is also included.
Frisch did radio play-by-play for Giants games in 1947 and 1948, and while our original title for this lot dated the piece to the 1940s, it more likely dates to the 1950s, as Frisch continued to do postgame shows on television until suffering a heart attack after his program one day in 1956.
The piece appears in outstanding condition, though the reverse has suffered some wear, with some water staining visible on the cardboard back. The base and easel back appear to have torn away. Despite this, a unique and interesting display featuring a Hall of Famer, the first of its kind that we have seen.
