Considered by many to be the most attractive prewar set the Gold Border set was produced by the American Tobacco Company in 1911 as an improvement to its now-legendary White Border T206 issue. Featuring highly detailed player portraits inside colorful and ornate backgrounds the borders of the T205s were flecked with regal gold paint. The result was an explosion of color each card a classic. The T205 of Dodgers outfielder Zach Wheat has become one of the set"s defining cards. Not quite iconic but still seemingly one of the images most commonly used to represent the set among hobby periodicals and books the card"s vivid gold background brings sharp contrast with the gold border. This example extremely well-centered with a well-preserved image suffers from mild corner wear and less mild chipping. The card"s reverse which features the more common Sweet Caporal advertisement exhibits some mild staining.A beautiful example of one of the better-known cards of a Hall of Famer from a beautiful prewar set.Population data:PSA Population: 227 total graded 47 at this level 34 higherSGC Population: 191 total graded 27 at this level 18 higher
