These days seeing the number 42 on the back of a uniform is a rare occurrence except on Jackie Robinson Day. In 1997 each team retired the number out of respect for the achievements of Robinson. In 1961 the number had not attained its significance however and young Giants pitcher Bobby Bolin assumed the number before the start of his rookie season. He would appear in 37 games that year starting just one but pitching 48 innings. It would be the beginning of a respectable 13-year career including nine with the Giants where primarily as a reliever and spot starter he would post a 3.40 lifetime ERA. His rookie jersey is a beautiful Wilson flannel the aforementioned number 42 sewn on the reverse the familiar Giants logo on the front. All the necessary tags are intact though MEARS has deducted 1 1/2 points due to a missing collar strip and a single replaced button. A few minor repairs from the period are evident otherwise a strong jersey with excellent signs of use. LOA from MEARS grade A 8.5.
