Complete November 3 1866 issue of Harper's Weekly including this attractive woodcut depicting the members of the Brooklyn Atlantics and Philadelphia Athletics. The team members include Dickey Pearce (bottom row fourth from left) John Galvin (bottom row second from right) Fred Crane (seated front right) and most notably Lipman Pike (likely top row third from left). Pike was the first Jewish baseball player and is often credited with being the first professional baseball player. The woodcut is part of the complete issue which has been folded backward at the spine so that the baseball woodcut image displays outward. The reverse folding has resulted in tearing at the spine however the entire piece presents extremely well the pages remarkably well-preserved. A beautiful and historically important early woodcut image.
