The 1985 St. Louis Cardinals were one of the more beloved teams of the era. Winners of 101 games the team was built on speed with Vince Coleman setting the pace with 110 stolen bases but Willie McGee adding 56 Andy Van Slyke swiping 34 and Tommy Herr and Ozzie Smith (HOF) each stealing 31. The team scored 747 runs and featured an outstanding pitching staff led by 20-game winners John Tudor and Joaquin Andujar along with 18-game winner Danny Cox. The team lost the World Series in 7 to the crosstown Kansas City Royals. One of the team's leaders was starting pitcher Andujar. Despite leading the team throughout the season Andujar's performance in the World Series was subpar getting knocked out in the fifth inning of Game 3. Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog elected to go with John Tudor on short rest in Game 7 a move that did not pay off resulting in Andujar being brought into a long relief role. This set up an infamous confrontation with home plate umpire Don Denkinger that resulted in Andujar being suspended for the first ten games of the 1986 season. Presented here is a stunning NL Champions ring given to Andujar's wife. A stunning example the ring is a perfect miniature version (size 9) of the players' rings Andujar's name appearing on the shank the interlocking "SL" set into a red stone. A hero of the 1982 World Series Andujar was beloved in the Dominican community "One Tough Dominican" (his self-appointed nickname). He passed away in 2015 at the age of 62 after a long battle with diabetes. An excellent memento of a Cardinals and Astros fan favorite.
