Recent auctions have clearly illustrated the rise in popularity of early Exhibit cards in general with card after card setting record prices within the grade. Long underappreciated the beautiful photography clean images and outstanding player selection of early Exhibit sets have captured the attention of hobbyists with no card generating more interest than the 1925 card of Yankee Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig. Once obtainable for a few thousand dollars the last several years have seen unbelievable price appreciation first at the lower grades followed by astronomical increases in the middle grades. In 2017 qualified PSA 6 broke $100 000 and an SGC 5 broke $80 000 in our summer auction that same year. Just four years later that same qualified PSA 6 eclipsed $800 000 finally establishing Gehrig among the most important desirable and expensive of all the Hall of Fame rookie cards. This growth is with good reason: Lou Gehrig is one of the most popular players ever to play and certainly is one of the greatest of all-time. His legend has only increased over the years and values of Gehrig memorabilia in general has begun to take its rightful place among the most valuable of all baseball collectibles. It was after all just a few years ago that a Gehrig game-used bat attracted considerable attention in the media ultimately selling for the record price of $437 000 in a Love of the Game Auction at the time one of the highest prices paid for a game-used bat of any player. The demand for quality Gehrig-related material continues to rise dramatically as hobbyists continue to seek out the finest material from the game's all-time greats. Presented here is a gorgeous example of Gehrig's first card recently graded VG 3 by PSA with the MK qualifier. The card is stunning one of just 36 examples to have been graded by PSA and certainly the most recent. Boasting a superior image and edges and corners that suggest a higher technical grade the card exhibits very little noticeable surface wear. Close inspection of the frut will reveal very light edge chipping and corner wear none of which interfere with the tremendous aesthetic appeal of the card. Careful examination of the card front under a 40x loupe reveals no wrinkling or surface abrasions; some very light corner dings are barely visible to the naked eye. An examination of the reverse with that same loupe reveals the cause of the qualifier: several very light stray marks which have been erased from the card but still leave telltale signs visible in the upper-right corner. It should be noted that these markings do not appear to be writing; they are simply two small stray marks each approximately a centimeter in length barely visible. Some edge and corner chipping is also evident on the reverse contributing to the grade but not detracting from the eye appeal of the card.
