LATE NOTE: A copy of the MEARS LOA has now been uploaded to this lot listing. It is difficult to explain the size and scope of Ted Patterson's outstanding collection. Dozens of game-worn jerseys and caps thousands of autographs game-used bats advertising display materials publications scorecards yearbooks cards press pins and other memorabilia decorated quite literally every room in his house. Moving the collection from his home in Baltimore to our warehouses in New Jersey and New York required a considerable amount of time and effort - three box trucks and a cargo van hauled everything away. Over the years Ted developed relationships with dozens of collectors and his collection was featured in Baltimore-area news stories quite a bit. A lot of people know about Ted and have seen handled or spoken about many specific items in his collection. When we announced that Love of the Game Auctions would be handling the sale of Ted's collection we received many many phone calls from people who were interested in purchasing specific items. But for some reason one specific item seems to have generated the most interest: The Boog Powell batting helmet. We don't know why but this helmet has generated quite a bit of email and telephone inquiries. Of course Boog Powell is a Baltimore Hero one of the most popular players ever to put on an Orioles uniform. He was a vital member of the 1966 championship team batting .287 with 34 home runs and 109 RBI finishing third in the MVP voting. He would later win the MVP in 1970 batting .297 with 35 home runs and 114 RBI. His best season was probably 1969 when he batted .304 with 37 home runs and 121 RBI. He was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1979 and later became a celebrity appearing in about a dozen commercials for Miller Lite. He is currently the owner of Boog's Barbecue a restaurant chain that includes a location at Camden Yards and he often appears at team events as a goodwill ambassador. So he certainly has his fans. The batting helmet is fantastic dating to the 1962-66 period. Powell's uniform number 16 appears on the helmet in DymoTape just under the Oriole logo. The uniform number is problematic for the authenticator since the helmet design was used during a four-year period but Powell only wore the number 16 in 1962 with Al Smith wearing the number in 1963 and Sam Bowens wearing the helmet from 1964-66. Unequivocally a game-worn Orioles batting helmet a leap of faith is required to attribute the helmet to its likely owner Boog Powell. Powell of course signed the brim of the helmet for Ted Patterson. The helmet exhibits heavy wear the shell cracked in the back. An outstanding game-worn batting helmet likely - but not unequivocally - worn by one of the greats in Baltimore Orioles history
