Interesting official sourvenir scorecard for the "Spring All-Star Game " held on March 17 1940 with proceeds benefiting the Finnish Relief Fund as that country was suffering under the weight of the Winter War which ended four days prior to the game with the signing of the Moscow Peace Treaty. The game brought stars from both leagues together at Plant Field in Tampa where after being entertained by Al Schacht fans were treated to a ballgame. According to the Tampa Tribune: The field and stands were liberally sprayed with bunting and flags. It was a strange unfamiliar touch; the blue elongated cross of Finland against a field of white. All over the grounds the Finnish flags fluttered proudly beneath the stars and stripes. Somehow this seemed to be symbolic a stern firmly settled old democracy hovering protectingly over a new and bewildered son of the same political philosophy. Baseball dignitaries team owners and both league presidents were in attendance everyone but the players and umpires bought a ticket Judge Landis threw out the first pitch and 13 180 attendees raised more than $23 000 for the relief effort as the National League won the game 2-1 partially due to the play of hometown favorite Al Lopez. The scorecard exhibits some wear including toning some edge tears and a clipped upper corner along with some mild corner creases. Hall of Famers listed inside include Mel Ott Enos Slaughter Johnny Mize Ernie Lombardi Lopez Leo Durocher Joe Gordon Joe DiMaggio Lefty Gomez Red Ruffing Ted Williams Jimmie Foxx Joe Cronin Bobby Doerr Bob Feller and Hank Greenberg along with managers Bill McKechnie and Joe McCarthy both of whom along with Judge Landis grace the cover. An outstanding seldom-seen program from a little-known game that is in many cases lost to history.
