The Zeenut cards of PCL players were the longest-running set of PCL baseball cards. Inserted into boxes of Home Run Kisses Zeenuts and Ruf-Neks candy the cards were produced from 1913 through 1937 and contained a coupon at the bottom of the card that could be redeemed for a variety of prizes. This was a massive set with new discoveries being made all the time. As of today a total of 122 players have been found with the set"s 1911 design two of which are represented in this lot. Ossie Vitt was a third baseman with the 1911 San Francisco Seals broke into the Major Leagues in 1912 with the Detroit Tigers and played ten seasons with Detroit and Boston before returning to the minors where he finished his career. Elmer Koestner was a pitcher with the Portland Beavers in 1911 where he compiled a 25-15 record against a 2.62 ERA. Koestner had a brief Major League career pitching in 36 games in 1910 and 14 with Cleveland Chicago and Cincinnati. As with many Zeenuts these two raw cards are in low grade assessed POOR at best. The reverse of the Koestner card has pencil writing appearing as if someone once used the card to keep score in a game. The reverse of the Vitt has back damage perhaps from a scrapbook removal and "1914" written in ink on the front. Still these are outstanding examples of a difficult-to-find issue that is a hit among PCL collectors.
