While collectors are certainly familiar with the 1967 Topps "Punch-Outs" test issue the 1966 issue of the same name is far more rare. In fact the cards from this issue are among the most rare ever produced by Topps - only a handful of surviving examples of the 1966 issue are known. The cards werea prototype for the 1967 issue which was a test issue in and of itself. The 1966 cards were blank-backed cards measuring approximately 2 1/2" x 4 5/8" perforated at the center to provide for a National League and American League "game" to be played by punching out the perforated baseballs. The colorful (and somewhat complicated) cards were produced on thick cardboard each side containing an image of a player and resemble miniature versions of the old punchboards of the 1930s (in fact the design for the wrappers for this issue actually called them "Topps Punchboards"). The cards are extraordinarily rare today with only a few examples known to exist. Presented here is an example featuring Hall of Fame third baseman Ron Santo representing the National League backed with catcher Earl Battey of the American. The card has been affixed in place with clear plastic tape onto a sheet that was actually part of Topps' archive books; the familiar notation lines visible along the edge of the sheet. This card has been affixed in placce since 1966 and while it likely could be removed by a professional conservator we are fans of the historical importance of the piece as affixed to Topps' archive sheets. These cards are unbelievably rare. In fact as of this writing PSA has graded just five cards from the issue with two graded by SGC and no more than one example of each card. Further this particular Santo/Battey card has not been listed in the Standard Catalog - it may well be the only example known! A tremendous card extraordinarily rare a prototype of a test issue featuring a Hall of Famer affixed to Topps' own reference sheet.
