The 1960 Fleer "Baseball Greats" issue is a 78-card set that is very underrated in the hobby an outstanding selection of quality subjects that was subjected to a variety of print flaws from snow and poor registration to severe centering problems. The card stock is also subject to considerable toning; the cards are often found yellowed. Presented here is a higher-grade set with some extraordinary examples. A technical assessment of the set would be as follows: 24% NM-MT 37% NM 29% EX-MT and 10% EX or lesser. However the technical assessment of the set does not do the cards justice - our assessment of grade typically considers centering as a factor and so many of the cards that we would classify as EX-MT or EX are cards with much stronger eye appeal but weak centering. All in all these cards are spectacular with a few corner dings here and there and a few examples mildly toned. Three of the cards have been graded as follows: 1) #28 Lou Gehrig: GAI MINT 9; 2) #42 Ty Cobb: PSA NM 7; 3) #72 Ted Williams: PSA NM-MT 8. We assess the additional ungraded keys as follows: #2 Mathewson (EX-MT) #3 Ruth (EX-MT) #6 Johnson (NM-MT) #62 Wagner (NM).
