The eighth-place 1954 Pittsburgh Pirates finished the season with a terrible record of 49-105 a rebuilding team about to be shaken to its core by the arrival of outfielder Roberto Clemente. Presented here is a Spalding official National League baseball (dated from 1947-51) signed by nine members of the 1954 team. The most important signature on the ball is that of second baseman Curt Roberts who played three seasons in the big leagues and who passed away in 1969. Roberts' signature appears on the east panel of the baseball all alone as a single-signed baseball. The west panel includes the signatures of Eddie Pellagrini Sam Jethroe and Cal Abrams. Signatures on the adjacent panels include Nelson King Paul Smith Walker Cooper Bob Friend and Fred Haney. The baseball is reasonably clean the signatures each bold and legible applied in blue ballpoint. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
