Issued to promote Hires brand root beer the cards in this 1958 set were attached to wedge-shaped tabs that served the purpose of inserting the cards into cardboard cartons of soda bottles. The tabs were perforated each containing an entry form for a membership in the "Hires Baseball Club." Between the method of distribution and the purpose of the tabs cards from this issue still containing the tabs are very scarce today. Presented here is a very attractive complete 1958 Hires Root Beer set with the tabs attached to each of the issue's 66 cards. The collection was assembled by hobbyist Ted Patterson some time ago and we have elected to keep the set in its entirety ungraded. The cards have been stored for many years in three-pocket plastic sheets and those sheets were stored away in a three-ring binder not designed for baseball cards along with other cards. The result is that the cards largely have the appearance of higher-grade cards at first glance but many would grade technically lower due to waviness or indentations from the binder rings or from the other cards in the binder. For the most part the cards do possess their original gloss and color making this a very pleasing set. A condition breakdown of the set according to technical grade would be 2% NM; 12% EX/MT; 18% EX; 23% VG/EX; 21% VG; 12% GOOD; 9% F; and 3% lesser. As is the case with all cards from this issue the cards do on occasion suffer from irregular cuts that cause some miscuts on the reverse. In a few cases (particularly the Newcombe and Sullivan cards) the perforations are slightly weak but all are intact. Of particular note is the fact that the condition issues are more prevalent with the higher-number cards than the lower simply due to the method of storage over the years causing bending to the last few binder pages. Key cards grade as follows: #10 Ashburn (F); #17 Doby (G); #23 Reese (EX - ding to upper corner); #25 Mays (EX - ding to upper corner); #36 Mazeroski (VG/EX); #44 Aaron (VG/EX due to a light smear of grease or something similar on the surface); #55 Drysdale (VG/EX); #61 Snider (G). Despite the condition issues the overall eye appeal of this set is significant; an extremely attractive and very scarce complete set. 66 cards total.
