1973 Topps #556 Yankees Team card signed across the front of the card in blue ink by Roger Maris. At first blus one would think that there is no relationship between the 1973 Yankees and Maris but a deeper dive into Yankees history reveals otherwise. Maris' 1965 season saw him play in just 46 games a misdiagnosed broken hand restricting his batting average to .239 in just 155 at bats. Suffering through further injuries in 1966 Maris was a fall guy for the failing Yankees and as he was considering retirement the Yankees traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. Maris revived his career with the new team posting stronger power numbers and raising his batting average driving in seven runs and batting .385 in the 1967 World Series the best World Series of his career. He retired at the end of the 1968 season opening a beer distributorship for Anheuser-Busch in Florida. In 1973 the change in Yankees ownership helped reconcile Maris with the Yankees as new owner George Steinbernner worked hard to re-establish relations with Maris. Maris' signature on the 1973 team card in that way represents the rekindling of the team's relationship with their former outfielder. In 1984 the Yankees retired Maris' number 9 cementing him as one of the great Yankees.
