Simply spectacular example of Ty Cobb's beautiful card from the T205 Gold Border issue considered by many to be the most beautiful card in the set and one of the most beautiful prewar cards ever manufactured. By the beginning of 1911 Cobb was a bona fide star having led the American League in batting for four consecutive seasons (he would ultimately lead the league nine years in a row and 12 of 13 consecutive seasons between 1907 and 1919). His 1911 season was probably his career best as he batted .419 with an astonishing 248 hits 147 runs scored 47 doubles 24 triples and 127 runs batted in - career bests in each category leading the league in each as well - along with a league leading 83 stolen bases. The card itself is simply wonderful nearly perfectly centered with shimmering gold borders and sharp edges and corners some minor chipping at three of four corners likely keeping the card from a higher holder but certainly not diminishing its unquestionable eye appeal. This card is one of three SGC-graded examples at this level to have sold at public auction in the past three years and this is arguably the finest of the three sold at auction as part of the Leon Luckey collection in 2015 and tucked away in a private collection ever since. A stunning example with outstanding registration color and clarity of image.
