The C46 Imperial Tobacco issue of 1912 was a turn-of-the-century Canadian issue featuring players from the International League (which included Toronto and Motreal). The woodgrain borders make the issue extremely condition-sensitive as the borders are extremely prone to chipping. Incorrectly identified on the PSA grading label and seemingly all relevant checklists is this gorgeous high-grade example of Marty Purtell's C46 card. While major leaguer Billy Purtell did play a season with Montreal in 1917 it was longtime minor leaguer Marty who is pictured on this card. The inifielder had an astonishingly long career 29 seasons of active play as he broke into the minors in 1908 spending most of the season with the Hannibal Cannibals (really) and played his final games at the age of 46 with the 1936 Fremont Reds of the Ohio State League before serving two seasons as manager of the Mobile Shippers of the Southeastern League an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite appearing in 2 431 minor league games Purtell never played an inning of major league ball. Just 15 examples of this card have been graded by PSA with only one higher. Corners are sharp and the card exhibits very little surface wear very light touches at the corners likely responsible for the grade. An outstanding card of a longtime minor leaguer.
