The 1938 Goudey Ernie Lombardi variation is the only known variation in the set. Lombardi a member of the Cincinnati Reds in 1938 was erroneously listed as a member of the Red Sox. Goudey chose to correct this error by overstamping the word "Sox" with the image of a baseball along with the letter "s" next to the word "Red" in "Red Sox." This poor-looking solution is present on the overwhelming majority of the low-number Lombardi cards. The error was corrected on the high-number version correctly listing Lombardi with his correct team. However a small number of cards exist that show that Goudey actually corrected the error before printing the second series. The error was corrected by deleting the word "Sox" entirely and adding the letter "s" to indicate Lombardi was a member of the Reds. The corrected version is much more scarce than the common original printing. This example graded GOOD 2 by SGC does exhibit wear consistent with the grade but still boasts strong eye appeal given the condittion. This is a very scarce variation. An exceptional card one of the more scarce errors of the mainstream 1930s issues.
