Few prewar card issues epitomize the term "scarce and desirable" the way the 1887 N690 Kalamazoo Bat cards do. Issued between 1886 and 1887 the "K-Bats" are CdV-sized photographic cards mounted on heavy cardboard. They can be found with blank backs or with advertising printed on the reverse. Tough 19th Century cards are often the passion of advanced long-time collectors that prefer their cards ungraded in their collection. However grading company population reports do give us an idea of relative scarcity and just a few hundred examples have been graded. SGC has graded 9 examples of the Ed Andrews card just three of which have graded higher than VG 3 with only two at this level. The scarcity of Kalamazoo Bats cards coupled with their desirability among advanced collectors means that they don't trade hands very often. Assembling a complete set is merely impossible with just one registered set between the PSA and SGC registries combined (an SGC registered set that is just 60% complete). As such even lower grade examples routinely sell for several thousand dollars. Beyond all those stats though this is an attractive card. Andrews is pictured on the field in his batting stance very little about the image aside from Andrews' attire and mustache would give away the era as the field and stands are clear and very similar to the fields and stands we have today. The VG grade assessed by SGC speak to the surface wear as well as some mild wear at the edges and corners. An extremely attractive card from a highly prized set.
