Our Fall 2018 auction featured a wonderful cabinet photo of Dick Johnston a Walden Smith cabinet featuring the star who played just two games with the Boston Reds of the Player's League. The success of that cabinet let to a consignment of multiple Walden Smith cabinet photos including this featuring outfielder Tom Brown who hit .280 and scored 149 runs in the only Player's League season. As was the case with most of the players for the 1889 Boston Beaneaters Brown jumped to the fledgling Player's League in 1890 wearing a uniform virtually indistinguishable from that of the Beaneaters. Based on this grouping of Walden Smith cabinets being offered we now believe these to be Beaneaters cabinets likely dating to 1889. This example exhibits some wear around the edges and corners along with mild foxing and some slight toning to the image. Still a scarce cabinet.
