I have one to sell!
In a time before set registries and third-party grading collectors built "topical subsets" to cater to their collecting passions creating ways of displaying their collections in the context of their homes dens or "card rooms." Such is the case of this beautiful display a wonderful 23" x 19" framed and matted piece containing baseball cards depicting 18New York Yankees Hall of Famers. Each of the cards has been professionally matted and framed in a dramatic fashion surrounding a vintage linen postcard of Yankee Stadium. Of course our inclination was immediately to open up the frame remove the cards and submit them for grading to be sold individually. Our consignor however had other ideas: it was his hope that a winning bidder would appreciate the dedication and care with which the display was assembled and the beauty of the display and perhaps consider keeping it as it was intended: an homage to the greatest team in history with key cards of its greatest players. While we cannot inspect the edges or reverses of the cards due to the framing we can vouch for the visual appeal of each and will note any significant visible flaws in our description below. 1) Yogi Berra: 1958 Topps; 2) Jack Chesbro: 1909-11 T206 back unknown surface appears clean with excellent gloss and rich color; 3) Earle Combs: 1928 ice cream issue (W502 Yuenglings Tharp's Harrington's etc - back unknown); 4) Bill Dickey: 1934-36 Diamond Stars; 5) Joe DiMaggio: 1939 Playball; 6) Whitey Ford: 1953 Topps clean with strong gloss small surface stain visible in left border; 7) Lou Gehrig: 1934 Goudey #37; some surface staining and visible creasing at the top right; 8) Lefty Gomez: 1941 Playball; 9) Waite Hoyt: 1926 Sports Co. of America; 10) Miller Huggins: 1923 W515-1 Strip card; 11) Willie Keeler: 1909 E90-1 visible surface discoloration; 12) Tony Lazzeri: 1932 U.S. Caramel moderate surface wear; 13) Mickey Mantle: 1952 Bowman light surface wrinkle across center of card; 14) Herb Pennock: 1928 W513 Strip card; 15) Phil Rizzuto: 1949 Bowman visible surface wear; 16) Red Ruffing: 1940 Playball; 17) Babe Ruth: 1933 Goudey #181 slight speck of paper loss at left edge small stain upper right; 18) Casey Stengel: 1951 Bowman very clean surface. The linen postcard displays well with a clean and colorful surface; signs of postal use are not evident but possible. An exceptional display with 18 total cards plus the postcard.
