Produced by the Jay S. Meyer company of Philadelphia PA in 1909 this issue was known for nearly 100 years as simply the "W555 Strip Card Set " with only theoretical guesses as to which sort of product these postage stamp-sized hand-cut cards were packaged with. Most felt that the cards were cut from boxes of candy their sepia images superimposed with a player and team name. With player images related to other candy cards of the era (according to the Standard Catalog the images utilize the players and poses featured in the E93 E94 E97 and E98 set) the cards have long been considered a candy issue. However recent discoveries of complete uncut boxes have revealed the Jay S. Meyer confectionery association. The cards four of which were printed on each of the small boxes could be cut off their box however the box itself folded into what resembled a small "pinhole camera" or toy camera. Perhaps the box was meant to be a toy camera which took the attached "pictures." Perhaps it was meant to be a viewer of some sort. The answer may be forever lost to history.Presented here is a fresh W555 of one of the most colorful and popular players of the deadball era - pitcher George "Rube" Waddell. The card is crease-free and maintains all its original borders on all four sides and has not been hand cut any further. It is a particularly scarce card from a difficult issue.Population Data:SGC Population: 4 total graded (30 50 84 86)PSA Population: 4 total graded (2 4 6 8)
