I have one to sell!
Several auctions ago we received a consignment that included a small snapshot photo of Lou Gehrig bending to field what appeared to be a thrown ball. We submitted it to PSA for authentication as a Type 1 photo and learned that the photo was actually a mass-produced snapshot of some kind as opposed to an original photo as examples of the photo had been submitted to them in the past. Lo and behold just a few months later a consignor visits us at the White Plains show with a grouping of 32 such snapshots. Each pictures a posed "action" shot of a Yankee each measures approximately 4" x 5" with white borders and are extremely well-composed. The reverse of each card is stamped with a number with what appears to be a rubber stamp. The photos are beautiful and depict various members of late 1930s Yankees. Most telling is the presence of both Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig which obviously dates the issue between 1936 and 1939. The players are pictured in either their home pinstripes or road greys and the presence of palm trees in several helps us pinpoint the timing of the photos to spring training. While a few of the photos appear to have been taken in front of a crowd the majority are taken on open field. Subjects include Red Ruffing Bill Dickey Joe McCarthy Lefty Gomez McCarthy with Jacob Ruppert and many other Yankee greats from the era. A tremendous grouping of photos likely mass produced and distributed as a set. 32 photos total.
