Hall of Famer Harry Heilmann boasted a .342 lifetime batting average in a 17-year career driving in 100 runs or better nine out of ten seasons between 1921 and 1929. At 38 years old Heilmann moved into the boradcast booth becoming the first former player to do so. Heilmann remained a Detroit broadcaster until he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1951. In a true story of baseball friendship his old friend Ty Cobb visited in the hospital and to boost Heilmann's spirits told the former athlete he had been inducted into the Hall of Fame. It wasn't true - Heilmann was not inducted until after he died. Our print catalog mistakenly refers to this piece as originating from the 1930s. Further research makes it clear that the piece could not have been produced before 1948 as the Altes brand of beer was not available before then. As such the time that this piece could have been produced falls within a very narrow window which is likely why it is so scarce. Matted and framed to a finished size of 18" x 22" the piece exhibits some significant wear at the top particularly on the left corner where some paper loss is evident. Water staining is also apparent along the bottom edge. Light foxing is also visible in the lighter areas of the sign. Still a colorful and attractive advertising piece promoting a public appearance of the first baseball player ever to establish a second career in the broadcast booth.
