An astonishing selection of players hand-picked by Connie Mack all presented on one single baseball as signed at the 50th Anniversary celebration of one of the game's greatest managers. One is not likely to find an assortment of signatures on a single baseball that packs a greater punch than this. On Friday August 4 of 1944 29 000 baseball fans braved a transit strike and made their way to Shibe Park in Philadelphia to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the great Connie Mack's managerial career. "Connie Mack Night" was anchored by a night game with the Yankees a performance by Jimmy Wallington and the NBC band. Abbott and Costello were on hand to perform the famous "Who's On First?" routine. Before the game Mack would name his All-Time All-Star team and one-by-one as he called out their names they would greet him at home plate. The All-Stars named by Mack included Mickey Cochrane Bill Dickey Lefty Grove Walter Johnson George Sisler Eddie Collins Honus Wagner Home Run Baker Babe Ruth Tris Speaker and Ty Cobb. Of those players only Cochrane (kept away due to his wartime duties with the United States Navy) and Cobb (unknown reasons) were not present. Presented here is an outstanding memento from Mack's All-Time All-Star team: a single baseball boldly signed by all the members of the team who were present at the festivities - plus the legendary manager himself. Inscribed in an unknown hand "1944 - 50th Anniv." the baseball is well-soiled (the soiling for the most part does not interfere with the quality of the signatures) with Mack's signature on the sweet spot amidst the inscription. The West panel contains bold signatures from Frank Baker Tris Speaker and Walter Johnson while the East panel is graced solely by Eddie Collins. The South panel features George Sisler (whose signature is slightly marred by a small but dark stain) Lefty Grove and Bill Dickey. The North panel however is the piéce de résistance - a wide-open panel featuring large bold side-by-side signatures of Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth. What a display! Also included with the ball is a lovely Type 2 portrait of Mack originally taken in 1931 measuring approximately 7" x 9". Full LOA on the baseball from PSA/DNA. Please note that there is a reasonable reserve on this lot.
