Commonly known as the “Uncle Sam” card in the second series of the T209 set this famous card features Benjamin Thompson. Not a baseball player Thompson is widely believed to have been a local farmer in the Wilson North Carolina area and likely the supplier of tobacco to Erwin-Nadal who then used his tobacco in producing Contentnea Cigarettes. Collectors of this elusive set also surmise that this card was some sort of redemption. A few years ago two Erwin-Nadal albums were uncovered with their interior pages showing printed photos of nearly every card in the set. Importantly this same image of Thompson is prominently printed on a full page of its own in the early part of the album. This card's reverse is unique and aids in the redemption theory. While all other examples from the set only feature an advertisement for Contentnea Cigarettes this card's reverse hints to some sort of redemption whereby someone could turn in the card for a prize possible a Contentnea Cigarettes album featuring nearly the entire set of baseball cards. Also unique to this particular card is that it lacks a printed factory location. Instead this bit of information is hand-stamped on the side of the card. This card is in poor condition with major creasing back damage and overall wear. Regardless of this card's condition it stands as a coveted and sought after piece. This card combines extreme rarity and widespread appeal making it a very special card that will not be seen again anytime soon.
