Gorgeous framed photo of the 1903 Pittsburgh Pirates in full uniform somoe in sweaters some in full coats all looking sharp and dapper in a studio setting. Framed to a finished size of 14" x 8" the photo is simply spectacular with tremendous clarity and boldness of image. The players are identified on a typewritten caption attached to the reverse of the frame: FRONT ROW (L-R): Claude Ritchey Otto Krueger Fred Clarke (HOF) Ginger Beaumont and Tommy Leach. MIDDLE ROW (L-R): Ed Doheny George Merritt Deacon Phillippe Barney Dreyfuss (HOF) Jimmy Sebring and "Powell." BACK ROW (L-R): Bucky Veil "unidentified player " Sam Leever Brickyard Kennedy Kitty Bransfield "Poole " Ed Phelps Honus Wagner (HOF) and Harry Smith. The photo was taken in Hot Springs Arkansas during Spring Training by photographer Ernest Eckler of Eckler Photography of Hot Springs a well-known studio in the area (also a likely explanation for the unidentified players). The detail in this photo is spectacular. A wide variety of Pirates garb is on display including several different sweaters full-length coats with gorgeous team insignias and in the case of Dreyfuss a handsome suit. The eye appeal is beyond criticism and yet a close inspection reveals a top-to-bottom tear right down the image of Wagner to the very bottom of the photo. The photo itself is mounted on the heavy board that serves as the back of the frame suggesting it may have been trimmed away from a heavier piece of board in the past. The tear obviously impacts the photo and yet does not flow through to the backing board. Simply an incredible photo of superior quality featuring early images of Hall of Famers Honus Wagner Fred Clarke and Barney Dreyfus.
