Gorgeous 9" x 12" imperial cabinet photo of William Henry "Yale" Murphy who received his nickname due to his choice of college. A member of the giants in 1894 1895 and 1897 Murphy was a small man just 5' 3" and 125 lb. Primarily an infielder Murphy hit .240 lifetime in partial seasons managing just five games played in 1897. Photo boasts outstanding contrast and clarity the detail simply amazing. Surface blemishes are evident and the edges appear trimmed but the piece's extraordinary size makes it difficult to believe the edges were trimmed for any deceptive reason. Some small spots appear in the background of the image. Based on the writing on the reverse the photo appears to have been used at Stanford University where Murphy later became a coach. "Dr. Tot Murphy of Yale - Stanford's Famous Base Ball Coach" is written in graphite pencil. A beautiful imperial photo.
