Joe Brown was an sculptor from Pennsylvania who specialized in sculpting athletic forms. Briefly a professional boxer he was the boxing coach at Princeton University between 1937 and the early 1960s becoming an artist in residence at the university and teaching sculpting courses until his 1977 retirement. During his career he created more than 400 pieces examples of which are on display at many college campuses and art museums. His 1944 work Pieta depicting an exhausted boxer being cradled by the referee was the winner of the National Academy of Design's Barnett Prize. His sculpture of blues guitarist Leadbelly is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Four large Brown sculptures - Punter Full-Swing (The Batter) Tackle and Play At Second Base were fixtures at Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium and are now located in the area near Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The massive 16-foot-tall works are striking jaw-dropping works of art. Presented here is the incredible work that graced the cover of Brown's introspective catalogue a 1935 work titled "The Hurler." Depicting an athlete in the midst of delivering a pitch the entire work measures just nine inches in height yet captures all the torque and tension of the human form about to explode into motion. The bronze statuette boasts a gorgeous green and black patina mounted to a 4 x 4 1/2" block of wood. One of Brown's earliest works created prior to developing his international renown. A stunning piece by a wonderful artist a striking visual and amazing centerpiece to any sports display.
