In our Summer 2016 auction we featured an etched resin plaque featuring a reproduction of W.P. Snyder's "A Collegiate Game Of Base Ball" which was hand-colored and etched into quarter-inch thick resin. Until about a month ago we'd not seen another one - and then a consignor walked into our office with a similar piece featuring a completely different image. This example is taken from the Gilbert Gaul woodcut entitled "Thrown Out On Second " which appeared in the September 10 1887 issue of Harper's Weekly. Similarly hand-tinted the image depicts in-game action a baserunner clearly heading toward second on what appears to be a stolen base attempt. The work's title gives away the end result. As with the earlier piece we cannot determine for certain when or how this piece was manufactured. We have found other examples of the earlier piece we sold in other auctions described as a period piece but we cannot be certain of this and thus cannot offer it as such. The existence of a second piece however makes it more likely in our opinion that these were produced sometime after the originals perhaps an early 20th Century reproduction. Regardless it is a wonderful depiction of a well-known baseball woodcut lovingly hand-colored to make a magnificent display.
