Spectacular photo of the great Christy Mathewson warming up on the sidelines as taken by noted photographer George Grantham Bain. The 6 5/8" x 4 5/8" original photo depicts Matty in his beautiful New York Giants sweater as he warms in front of the Giants bench at an unknown ballpark. The photo boasts spectacular clarity of image some slight discoloration at the left edge of the photo and a slight but visible ink bark at the top center. The photo reverse contains multiple Culver Pictures stamps and other editorial markings and notations along with a stamp verifying that the photo was deaccessioned from the Culver library in 1992. The presentation is strong a very slight notch in the upper-left edge mentioned here only for reasons of diligence but of no consequence with respect to eye appeal. Like many photos of its kind it is slightly wavy with minor wrinkling from use. In our research we have been unable to definitively date the photo though we believe it to date to 1909-1910 based on similar photos. The only example of this photo we have seen or that has been offered at auction an incredibly rare and desirable photo of one of the greatest pitchers ever to play. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
