One of the game's elite hitters and member of the 500 home run club Jimmie Foxx remains one of the game's most popular and widely-collected players 70 years after his retirement. Foxx bats are among the toughest of his era; according to PSA Bat Facts "Double X's" clubs are the toughest of all the 500 home run club members. This example a 1928-29 era Hanna Batrite has been graded GU 5 by PSA/DNA. The bat itself exhibits many characteristics of a pro model Hanna bat including the "TA" designation for "Tempered Ash" (the company's highest-quality wood) and the bat's length (36 inches) and weight (35.2 ounces). As noted by John Taube of PSA/DNA the bat exhibits evidence of heavy use with many cleat impressions and a handle crack that has been repaired with nails. At some point a layer of tape wrapped the handle as well though that tape has clearly been removed at some point. Additionally the bat knob is abnormally large in our opinion something that would be manufactured specifically to order and not something one would find in a retail bat. Absent of any provenance however one must look to the bat itself to provide evidence of being a pro model bat. As we have seen with the Lou Gehrig and Tris Speaker bats we have offered in our past two auctions it is the weight stamped into the knob that has provided the most clear evidence of being a pro model bat. Absent that weight stamp it becomes more difficult to confirm player use. As such while PSA/DNA feels that the bat exhibits heavy use and possesses identifiable use characteristics the grade they must assign is PSA/DNA GU 5. We have however discovered pictures of the 1929 Athletics dugout with the bat tray laid at the top of the dugout steps with Hanna Batrite bats clearly visible - definitive proof that Batrite bats were used by at least one member of the team. In 1928 Foxx began coming into his own as a player hitting .328 in 400 at bats with 13 home runs. The following season The Beast hit
