Always the biggest and most important name in Yankees - and baseball - lore it was in the mid-1980s that the Curtis Management coompany convinced Ruth's daughter Julia Ruth Stevens that his name and likeness could still be a source of income for the Ruth family. Soon Ruth was big business once again as his image was featured on "official" merchandise of all kinds. "Daddy would be amazed " said Julia Ruth Stevens in a 1995 Sports Illustrated article. "He did very well when he was alive but now he is generating more money than when he was playing ball." 1995 was a watershed year for the Ruth estate marking the 100th birthday of The Babe. A host of promotional products were made available for sale and his birthday was celebrated at the famous Old Timers Day held at Yankee Stadium each July. As part of the festivities Julie Ruth Stevens was presented with a commemorative plaque honoring Ruth's birthday. Presented here is that plaque. A typical gold-plated plaque featuring the Ruth "100th Anniversary" logo with an engraving that reads "Presented to the daughter of Babe Ruth Julia Ruth Stevens in honor of his 100th Birthday. Old Timers Day - July 22 1995 - "The House That Ruth Built" - Yankee Stadium Bronx NY." Mounted on parquet-style wood the plaque is in excellent condition with some minor wear and some scratching on the plaque itself. Our consignor did present this plaque to the Ruth family who confirmed its origin. An interesting piece commemorating both the 100th birthday of the game's greatest player and the powerful commercial presence he still has all these years later.
