Standing nearly 17" tall from the base to the top of his bat this outstanding figural ceramic and wood sculpture was striking to us at first glance due primarily to the proportion issues of the ballplayer. Upon first glance everything appears normal but a closer examination reveals hands considerably larger than his head calves wider than his thighs emphasizing athleticism and de-emphasizing humanity. Frederic Weinberg whose company label is affixed to the bottom of the base was a sculptor painter and industrial designer based in Philidelphia whose abstract mid-century work graced restaurants and retail establishments in the 1950s and early 1960s. Weinberg sculptures were often made of metal or wire were typically not as fleshed out as this in terms of detail and today often fetch considerable sums at auction. This example is quite attractive but also shows some of the wear of time with some minor paint chips and scuffs at the sleeve and along the base along with the reverse. The wooden bat is intact and the Weinberg Company decal at the bottom is securely affixed. An unusual piece of fine art created by a popular mid-Century sculptor and designer.
