Several years ago T206 collector Trae Regan posed a question to the Network 54 collecting community regarding an interesting print marking he had observed on a Rube Marquard "Follow Through" card - what appeared to be a red number 8 on Rube's left sleeve. Soon several other collectors had chimed in with other examples they owned or had found and the overall consensus was that the variation was a legitimate one albeit one that was uncatalogued. Despite some overtures with the Standard Catalog and a blog entry by the late Bob Lemke cataloging the variation seemed to have fallen by the wayside. At this year's National Sports Collectors Convention a T206 scholar approached us with this example and asked for our help. After some research and consultation with PSA and the Standard Catalog we have confirmed that the variation will appear in the 2018 edition of the Catalog and thus PSA has agreed to begin recognizing the anomaly. It will be added to the Registry as a variation as well. Presented here is the first-ever graded example of the newly-recognized "Red 8" variation. Our records indicate that this is one of just a handful currently known this example with the Piedmont 350-460 reverse though Sweet Caporal 460 series examples have also been found. Our research indicates that there are currently fewer than a dozen known examples of this variation though we certainly anticipate that after this auction and now that PSA has officially recognized the variation more will become known. Graded VG 3 the card does exhibit wear consistent with the grade. However the numerical grade is not what is important about the card - what is important is the visibility of the variation which in this case is crisp and easily visible just to the right of the interlocking "NY" logo on Marquard's sleeve. Perhaps the most fascinating component of T206 collecting is the fact that after decades of scholarly study we can still learn new things about the set and discover new variations. Presented here is the latest - an exceptionally rare newly-recognized variation of the Rube Marquard "Follow Through" - one of the more rare T206 variations now known.
